Beginner Golf Etiquette Tips
Etiquette is super important in golf. Here is my list of beginner golf tips when it comes to golf etiquette.
Do not slow down the play, always go with the flow of play. If your group is getting slow, allow the other players to play through.
Do not talk during other people’s playing time, and don’t allow yourself to cast a shadow on their play.
Do not stand too close to the hole.
Do not park your golf cart on the green as it can damage it.
Always pick up your tee after you use it. If it’s broken, throw it away. If it isn’t, you can reuse it.
If you think your ball may land near someone, warn them by yelling “fore!”.
Do not stand too close to a player when he or she is playing.
Try to wear a comfortable polo shirt and khakis, along with a hat and sunglasses, and don’t forget the suntan lotion.
Perfecting Your Backswing
To have a great backswing, you must maximize shoulder turn, minimize arm swing. Practice taking a swing from the 4 O’Clock position, then the 8 O’Clock, then 11 O’Clock (taking your shoulders back further each time) Make a note of how much you are swinging your arms each time, and try to shorten your backswing. Focus on turning your shoulders, while minimizing the swinging of the arms.
Try pointing your grip at the target line while halfway back, keep yourself parallel to the target line so as to maintain accuracy. Swivel your core, while minimizing arm swing.
The club and arms should stop after you are done pivoting back, thus you will ensure synchronicity between the swing and the target line. After you are all the way back, simply reverse yourself to power through the swing.
The Golf Swing
You want to hit the ball fairly straight on. This will maximize your distance. When you take the club back you are opening the face of the club. As you strike the ball you will be hitting it squarely and then you will be closing the face of the club after the ball is struck. Do not try to keep the club square during the entire time. The club will naturally flow in a circular motion and will not be square before, during and after the drive. The power will come from your core. Therefore, you can over-rotate but most likely you will under rotate if you are a beginner. You have to move your body as well as your club and it’s a matter of getting the perfect balance of 180 degrees (90 degrees open) changing to 90 degrees (square for the drive) to 180 degrees fully closed (the face is closed). You will find the perfect balance over time.
Putting Techniques
Here’s some advice on putting technique.
Try this grip:
Place the shaft into the palm of your lead arm, thus making the putter an extension of your lead forearm. Place your trail pinkie finger on the ring and long finger of your lead hand.
Before Putting:
Walk back and forth from the hole to the ball, trying to get a feel for the break. How steep is the break, how wide must your curve be? Of course you have to factor in wind speed into this as well.
Getting the pace down by practicing the swing:
Try to count one-one-thousand, etc. as you look from the hole back to the ball, this will get your rhythm down.
Draw a bold line in your mind:
Try to draw a bold line from the ball to your hold in the curve that you think it will need to take, then aim at the apex of the line.
